Shelving Supported Mezzanines consist of a few simple products. Shelving, Cross-Aisle Support, Bar Grating Deck, Railing, Stairway, Landing and in some instances Vertical Reciprocating Conveyors (VRC’s) are used to move product to the upper level. Pallet drop areas with lift-out, swing or sliding gates can be used for moving product to the second level using manual or powered stackers. Pallet drop areas need to have higher load capacity, stronger structures to absorb shock loads from pallet drops than shelving alone can provide. A small pallet drop area incorporated with the stairway and landing provides a simple, economical solution to the pallet drop area.

Here’s a good example of a company using Shelving Supported Mezzanines to double their stock room storage within the same footprint, taking full advantage of the available vertical clearance in their new building. In this space they will combine a shelving supported mezzanine where they maximize the available shelf space along with a free standing mezzanine where the space on the first level needs to be open for a kitting area while maintaing storage on the upper level.

Construction of the first level of shelving proceeds like any other Metalware Shelving installation. In this example, closed style shelving is being used, open style shelving can be used just as easily.

Metalware’s unique Cross-Aisle-Support (CAS) System is a key to the ease with which the system installs. Metalware is known for easy to install shelving systems and the CAS system fits the mold. CAS’s are installed, and aisle spacing is established as the first level of shelving is assembled.

The CAS simply slips over the face of the T-post and clips in place through the shelf clip hole. Quick, simple and secure in very little time. You can imagine the time saved by the installer on large jobs. After all, time is money!

Main aisles are often times designed wider to help accommodate ease of movement. Support for the deck is provided by Lugs being welded onto CAS and then CAS are bolted onto the lugs. This cuts the spans for the bar grating in the main aisle.

The bar grating span is also reduced in the main aisle by CAS at Back to Back sections. A special bracket is bolted in place and the CAS bolts to the bracket

Once the first level on shelving along with the CAS’s and bar grating deck are assembled, the second level of shelving is assemble utilizing the metalware Splice Plates bolted to the first level of shelving.

The finished Shelving Supported Mezzanine with more Metalware Shelving installed beside it with the deck level set to match a free standing mezzanine installed to provide clear space for a kitting area under the Mezzanine and storage on top of the mezzanine.

Here’s another Metalware Shelving Supported Mezzanine installed in a different area of the building. Imagine one level of shelving taking up twice the precious floor space for parts storage, the Shelving Supported Mezzanine preserves the floor space which can then be put to much better use.
